What is Sustainability?

Welcome to this first video lecture in this Introduction to Sustainable Design series! Below you’ll see a brief yet thorough lecture which aims to answer the question, What is Sustainability?  Joshua approaches this query by describing some of the predominant definitions of how people, planet, and profits relate to encompass the concept. He also acknowledges various environmental externalities that have resulted from recent human development and how this has spawned the sustainability movement as we know it today.

In addition, Joshua presents the difficulty of defining and implementing sustainability due to varying perspectives on the concept. He suggests that more attention should be paid to cultural and psychological components of sustainable development in addition to economic, institutional, and environmental ones. Lastly, Joshua shares some insights on how the challenges ahead can catalyze incredible opportunities to create a sustainable future that brings benefit to all.
